Desiderata

Desiderata

Desiderata, which translates from Latin as “Desired things” is a famous poem written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann an American writer (1872–1945). This touching poem has a lot of meaning for me; I was introduced by a dear old friend. It  gives a very beautiful message that encourages wisdom and compassion. Each line inspires a new thought with great meaning. I like this line “whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul”. This line means to me, no matter what life throws my way I will strive to keep a connection to my sense of self.  I wonder which line stands out to you and what meaning does it have?

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Glisters Proof Reader

I would like to give a huge thank you to Laura Ball www.lauraballtranslator.eu for proofreading my website. Laura was refreshing to work with. I greatly appreciated her efficiency and sensitivity. My website feels like an extension of me and I had reservations at the thought of another person revising what felt like my baby! Laura’s amendments polished my grammar and writing style without taking anything away from the content. In the process I also learnt a lot about how I write. Laura highlighted areas in my writing that I was not aware of. Her guidance regarding my overuse of certain words and the structuring of my sentences has been enlightening.

In all areas of my life I have a passion for growth. I am particularly fascinated with how we internally process our thoughts and feelings and relate to others. I think you would agree that this can be challenging! I often use the model of the Johari Window to explain to my clients how counselling can help them to make sense of the unknown areas of themselves and their interpersonal relationships. Whichever area of your life you gain awareness, this will allow for greater functioning. With the help of Laura’s expertise I now have more awareness and functioning with my writing style; thank you Laura.

How the name Glister Was Conceived

How the name Glister Was Conceived

I didn’t expect naming my business to be such a challenging process. I was looking for a name that reflected how I work and also to have a connection to me personally; I wanted a name that sounded both soft and strong. I became highly focused on words, any word, even words on road signs! I felt like I was going stir crazy!  Then in my Yoga class the focus was on ‘sparkling up’. I loved the word sparkle but it didn’t feel quite right, so I put sparkle in thesaurus and spotted glister. That’s how Glister evolved. Glister Counselling was conceived in my yoga class. Glister means to me, reflection, light and to shine. One of the analogies I use to explain how I work is that I metaphorically hold-up a mirror and what is reflected back helps my clients to find their own way through whatever they are struggling with. I feel such pleasure seeing the light return back into their eyes. The name Glister felt perfect; it ticked all the boxes.

The fact that Glister Counselling has a connection with yoga is symbolic because my vision is to be able to bring some of the benefits of mindfulness and relaxation into the corporate world. No matter what your age, ethnic origin, background or career path, it is tremendously beneficial to be able to press the pause button with awareness. There are techniques that can greatly help with anger management, assertive communication, self-esteem issues, anxiety and depression. Please click HERE for more information on mindfulness.
